What Is A Goldendoodle

Goldendoodle’s are designer dogs, a hybrid dog breed resulting from breeding a Poodle with a Golden Retriever. The Goldendoodle breed is not a breed but a crossbreed.

Types of Goldendoodle

You may have noticed that there are many variations to a Goldendoodle. There are different percentages of Retrievers and Poodles. We will break this down for you below to help you in choosing your Goldendoodle.

Of all the types of Goldendoodle this is the most known and is a mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle

Goldendoodle Generation Number

F1 Goldendoodles

The first generation Goldendoodles are identified with the letter and number F1. These are the product of a pure Retriever which is bred with a pure Poodle. The result of this is 50% poodle and 50% Golden Retriever. F1 Doodles are the traditional Doodle that have many of the traits people think of when then think Goldendoodle. They are intelligence, have a loving demeanor and are also referred to as being hypoallergenic. Many still shed a little though so best for a home with only light allergies. You also will notice the coats on this generation of Doodles. They are shaggy and can be curly.

F1B Goldendoodles

You get an F1B generation Doodle when you cross-breed a F1 Doodle with a Poodle. An F1B Goldendoodle will be 25% Retriever and 75% Poodle. This generation is popular due to the non shedding trait that occurs 99% of the time. This generation is the most hypoallergenic Goldendoodle type of the different generations. So if you have severe allergies this would be the best fit for your home. You still get the same strength and good health and the favorable personality traits with the F1B Doodle. The coat type again will vary here and can be long and wavy or shorty and curly. You will also see more color variation in the F1B generations.

Doodle Traits

Grooming will be a big requirement with Goldendoodles. Some more than others depending on the coat type. You should groom them about every 4 to 6 weeks and they should be brushed regularly.

The hair will be wavy to curly not so much straight but we do see it. You will have very little shedding if any at all. Most are very allergy friendly with the F1B being the most allergy friendly dog.

Goldendoodles with their Golden Retriever and Poodle parents will be very sweet and affectionate dogs. They are highly intelligent and love to play but are gentle still. They make great family dogs.

They make great therapy dogs but can also be used as service or guide dogs, however activity is a restraining factor in this for a happy healthy dog. They are great with challenge and make good agility dogs. They need exercise and do best in homes with active family members where they can get plenty of outdoor-activity.
